LAS ALPUJARRA
Las Alpujarra is a stunning area of natural beauty. Its lush meadows, wild flowers and rare species of birds surround Las Piletas. Popular hiking and cycling routes are sign posted through olive groves and fruit orchards. Four full and contrasting seasons make it an ideal all year round destination. One of the best times of year is in spring, which in this warm climate starts in February. At this time the wild flowers and fruit and almond blossoms are at their best. The traditional whitewashed villages of the region have narrow twisting streets and flat-roofed houses. The prettiest of these are Pampaneira, Bubion and Trevelez, which is the highest village in Spain and renowned for its cured ham. The area is loved for its friendly people and great food; many restaurants offer an inexpensive lunch menu between 2 and 4pm, and use fresh seasonal produce. The Alpujarra mountains fall straight down to meet the Mediterranean Sea at the Costa Tropical, creating a dramatic and rugged coast line. Adra, La Mamola and La Rabita are all popular resort towns within easy reach. Further inland is the Moorish city of Granada with its stunning Alhambra Palace and vibrant city life.
